Chapter 8: Air Pollution

Because trees are cut down and fuels are burnt, consuming oxygen. Consequences: breathing difficulties, suffocation and an unhealthy imbalance in the atmosphere.

They release toxic gases, smoke, ash and chemicals into the air. Far-reaching consequences include serious diseases, acid rain and ozone-layer depletion.

Gases like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides mix with rainwater in the atmosphere to form acids, which fall as acid rain, damaging buildings, crops and water bodies.

Polluted air is carried by wind from one country to another, so it is a global problem. Automobile pollution can be reduced by using public transport, unleaded/CNG or electric vehicles, PUC (pollution) checks, and fewer private vehicles.

Causes: smoke and chemicals from industries, exhaust from automobiles, burning of fuels, cutting of trees. Effects: respiratory and other diseases, acid rain, ozone-layer depletion, global warming and damage to buildings and crops.

Use public transport, CNG/electric vehicles and unleaded fuel; enforce PUC checks; control industrial emissions with filters; recycle waste; and plant more trees.

Clean air is essential for life and health. Breathing polluted air causes diseases and shortens life. Protecting air quality by reducing pollution ensures a healthy present and future for all living beings.
