Chapter 8 — Heredity

🧬 1. Heredity & Variation

Heredity = transmission of characters (traits) from parents to offspring. Variation = differences among individuals of a species. Traits are controlled by genes (units of DNA on chromosomes).

🌱 2. Mendel's Experiments (Pea Plant)

Gregor Mendel studied inheritance using garden pea, choosing contrasting traits (tall/short, round/wrinkled).

  • Monohybrid cross (one trait, e.g., height): Pure tall (TT) × pure short (tt) → F₁ all tall (Tt). On self-pollinating F₁ → F₂ shows 3 tall : 1 short.
  • Dominant & recessive: The trait shown in F₁ (Tall, T) is dominant; the hidden one (short, t) is recessive.
  • Dihybrid cross (two traits): F₂ ratio = 9 : 3 : 3 : 1 — showing traits are inherited independently.

🔬 3. Rules of Inheritance

Each trait is controlled by a pair of alleles (one from each parent). Germ cells (gametes) carry only one allele (half the chromosomes). At fertilisation, alleles pair up again, so the offspring gets an equal contribution from both parents. In humans, each parent gives 23 chromosomes → offspring has 46.

♀️♂️ 4. Sex Determination in Humans

Humans have sex chromosomes: females = XX, males = XY. The mother always gives an X. The father gives either X (→ girl, XX) or Y (→ boy, XY). So the father's chromosome decides the sex of the child.

📌 5. Acquired vs Inherited Traits

Inherited traits (in genes, e.g., eye colour) pass to offspring. Acquired traits (gained in lifetime, e.g., a scar, learned skills) do NOT pass on, because they don't change the genes of germ cells.

🧠 Remember: Monohybrid F₂ = 3:1, Dihybrid F₂ = 9:3:3:1. Dominant hides recessive. Male=XY, Female=XX; father decides sex. Acquired traits are not inherited.
⭐ Exam Tips: ① Monohybrid & dihybrid ratios (3:1, 9:3:3:1). ② Dominant vs recessive. ③ Genes/alleles & chromosomes. ④ Sex determination (father → X or Y). ⑤ Acquired vs inherited traits.
