Chapter 7 — How do Organisms Reproduce?

🧬 1. Why do Organisms Reproduce?

Reproduction makes new individuals of the same species — ensuring continuity of the species. DNA copying during reproduction gives small variations, which help in evolution and survival.

🔬 2. Asexual Reproduction (one parent)

MethodExample
Fission (binary/multiple)Amoeba (binary), Plasmodium (multiple)
BuddingHydra, Yeast
FragmentationSpirogyra
RegenerationPlanaria, Hydra
Spore formationRhizopus (bread mould)
Vegetative propagationroots/stems/leaves; layering, grafting, tissue culture

🌸 3. Sexual Reproduction in Plants

Flower parts: Stamen (male) = anther (makes pollen) + filament ; Pistil/Carpel (female) = stigma + style + ovary (contains ovules). Pollination (self/cross) transfers pollen to stigma → fertilisation → ovule becomes seed, ovary becomes fruit → germination gives a new plant.

👶 4. Sexual Reproduction in Humans

  • Male system: testes (make sperms + testosterone), vas deferens, urethra, penis.
  • Female system: ovaries (make eggs + hormones), fallopian tube (fertilisation), uterus (embryo develops), vagina.
  • Fertilisation forms a zygote → embryo develops in the uterus, nourished by the placenta. If the egg is not fertilised, the uterine lining sheds — menstruation (~28 days).

❤️ 5. Reproductive Health

Contraception: barrier (condom), chemical/hormonal (pills), IUCD (copper-T), surgical (vasectomy/tubectomy). It prevents unwanted pregnancy, spaces children, controls population and (condoms) prevents STDs like AIDS.

🧠 Remember: Budding=Yeast/Hydra. Fission=Amoeba. Anther=pollen (male), ovary=ovules (female). Vas deferens=male (not female). Menstruation=egg not fertilised. Sexual reproduction → variation.
⭐ Exam Tips: ① Asexual methods + examples. ② Flower parts (male/female). ③ Human male/female systems. ④ Menstruation, placenta. ⑤ Contraception methods; why sexual reproduction gives variation.
