📖 Chapter 13 — Our Environment (CBSE Class 10 Science): Detailed notes — ecosystem, food chains, energy flow, biomagnification, waste, ozone layer.

Chapter 13 — Our Environment

🌍 1. Ecosystem

An ecosystem = all living organisms (biotic) + their physical surroundings (abiotic), interacting together. Biotic components: Producers (green plants), Consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores), Decomposers (bacteria, fungi). Abiotic: air, water, soil, temperature, light.

🍃 2. Food Chains & Food Webs

A food chain shows the flow of food/energy: e.g., Grass → Deer → Lion. Each step is a trophic level: producers (1st) → primary consumers (2nd) → secondary (3rd) → tertiary (4th). Many interlinked food chains form a food web.

⚡ 3. Flow of Energy (10% Law)

Energy flows in one direction (sun → producers → consumers). Only about 10% of energy passes from one trophic level to the next; the rest is lost as heat. Hence food chains usually have only 3–4 levels.

☠️ 4. Biological Magnification

Biomagnification = increase in the concentration of harmful chemicals (like pesticides) at successive trophic levels. It is highest at the top level (e.g., humans), because these chemicals are not broken down and accumulate up the chain.

♻️ 5. Biodegradable vs Non-biodegradable

TypeExamples
Biodegradable (broken by microbes)food waste, paper, wood, leaves, cotton
Non-biodegradable (not broken)plastic, glass, metal, DDT, polythene

🕳️ 6. Ozone Layer

The ozone (O₃) layer in the upper atmosphere shields the Earth from the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays (which cause skin cancer, cataracts). CFCs (from ACs, refrigerators, aerosols) damage it. The Montreal Protocol (1987) limits CFC use to protect it.
🧠 Remember: Producers=plants, Decomposers=microbes. Energy flow one-way, 10% law → only 3-4 levels. Biomagnification highest at top. Plastic=non-biodegradable. Ozone blocks UV; CFCs harm it; Montreal Protocol.
⭐ Exam Tips: ① Ecosystem components (producers/consumers/decomposers). ② Food chain, trophic levels. ③ 10% energy law. ④ Biomagnification. ⑤ Biodegradable vs non-biodegradable; ozone depletion & Montreal Protocol.
