š Chapter 5 ā Arithmetic Progressions (AP) (CBSE Class 10 Maths): Detailed notes ā nth term and sum of an AP, with formulas and worked steps.
Chapter 5 ā Arithmetic Progressions
š¢ 1. What is an AP?
An Arithmetic Progression is a list of numbers in which each term is obtained by adding a fixed number d (the common difference) to the previous term. e.g. 2, 5, 8, 11, ⦠(here a = 2, d = 3).
Common difference d = aā ā aā = aā ā aā = ⦠(must be the same throughout).
š 2. nth Term of an AP
aā = a + (n ā 1)d
where a = first term, d = common difference, n = term number, aā = nth (general) term.
ā 3. Sum of first n Terms
Sā = n/2 Ā· [ 2a + (n ā 1)d ] or Sā = n/2 Ā· ( a + l )
where l = last term (aā). Also, aā = Sā ā Sāāā.
š§ Remember: d = aā ā aā (same for all). aā = a + (nā1)d. Sā = n/2[2a+(nā1)d] = n/2(a+l). Number of terms n = (l ā a)/d + 1.
ā Exam Tips: ā Check if a list is an AP (constant d). ā” Find aā, or n, or a, or d using aā = a+(nā1)d. ⢠Find Sā. ⣠"Which term is ā¦?" ā solve aā = value for n. ⤠Word problems (savings, salary, seats).
